Download a report which examines the way urban communities think and feel about living with wildlife in the suburbs. The research is particularly useful for communicators, educators and facilitators working in urban areas.

Urban wildlife research

The NPWS has undertaken extensive community research among people living in urban areas of NSW. Our aim was to investigate the nature of everyday living for residents of urban areas – in particular:

  • the way people understand conservation concepts
  • the way people feel about living with native plants and animals in urban areas.

The research reveals a range of understandings of conservation in urban communities. We have found that 'conservation' may lack relevance to people in urban areas. A mainstream audience often feels that conservation is a specialised area, the domain of 'experts'.

Who will find this research helpful?

The research report, titled 'Growing Conservation in Urban Communities', is being used by councils, community leaders, state agencies and non-government organisations. It can help guide the design, implementation and evaluation of education and involvement initiatives.

If you are a communicator, educator or facilitator working in urban communities, the report will:

  • tell you more about your target audience
  • help you increase the relevance of your programs, aligning them more closely with the needs of a mainstream audience.
