The Foundation is helping to save injured and entangled whales through provision of telemetry buoys and rescue kits. The Northern Rivers area of NSW are now benefiting from the addition of a rescue kit and three new satellite telemetry buoys will be used throughout NSW. The buoys and rescue kit were purchased from recently raised funds.
The buoys attach to the nets where the whale is tangled. Rescues often experience delays until the weather, location and speed of the animal as well as safety requirements align.
The use of the buoys means that disentanglement teams can easily locate the tangled whale even after delays. Marine Fauna Rescue Kits allow rescuers to deal efficiently and professionally with a range of incidents contributing to the conservation of whales.
Right now the Foundation is raising funds for the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA). ORRCA works to help rescue stranded marine mammals. It is a volunteer organisation and is the only licensed group allowed to be involved in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation and release.
ORRCA has a 24 hour hotline to call if you see a whale in distress: 02 9415 3333.
