Talking PAWS
by Greg Griffiths
Foundation Director

As a boy growing up watching a bandicoot feeding on our front lawn or listening to a male goldfinch singing beautifully as it sat in a tree over its mate nesting below, or a flock of 300 spice finches feeding in a neighbours paddock, and with an interest in all forms wildlife, it was devastating to see these disappear from my life.

Cats killed the bandicoot, council changed the time in the year it cut back the street trees depriving the goldfinches of their nesting sites and houses were built on the paddock eliminating a feeding source for the finches. My life became poorer of the simple pleasures I had enjoyed from watching these lovely animals.

From that memory I always wanted to contribute something positive to ensure my children, now grandchildren, are able to also enjoy the simple pleasures that nature provides us.

It is very fulfilling, as a Director of the Foundation, to be part of a dedicated team raising funds to secure wilderness areas in NSW and provide funds for specific projects to save our endangered species.

As a result of some of these successful projects my grandson has been able to watch in awe whales frolicking in our glorious Sydney Harbour and spot Little Penguins swimming and diving around Valentia Street Wharf while waiting to board a ferry.

The expression on his face of excitement and wonder was something I will never forget!

This is what we, the Foundation, are striving to achieve for all our young people for now and the future, and as you will see in this issue we are enjoying success on many fronts.

We will be dedicating ourselves and our resources to the conservation of all our endangered species and our threatened environment.
