Barrenjoey Lighthouse restored to new glory
Carmen Welss

After months of heritage landscaping, the day visitor area at Barrenjoey Headland is a safer, more inviting destination for day trippers. Take the climb up to the summit on a Sunday and enjoy a lighthouse
tour and a picnic with priceless views of Palm Beach and the Central Coast.

Tracks before and after
From the lighthouse visitors can see the improvements. Weeds have been removed from the summit and replaced with native shrubs and grasses, and tracks are now clearly defined to make the access safer for both walkers and vegetation. Photos: Carmen Welss and John Kenyon

Early in 2005 the National Parks & Wildlife Service celebrated the completion of the landscaping works at the lighthouse. Amongst the guest were representatives of the local council, the Royal Navy and the Foundation.

Even during the construction and landscaping works the lookout offered an ideal picnic spot with splendid views across the water to the Central Coast.

For the lookout's neat makeover sandstone walls were build by hand from local sandstone.
