“Grow me instead” |
||
Our article “Jumping the Garden Fence” received feedback from the Nursery and Garden Industry NSW & ACT (NGINA), pointing out the efforts the nursery industry makes to promote sensible planting and gardening conduct. The NGINA offers a range of publications and programs to encourage responsible choices of garden plants. Their booklet “Grow Me Instead” is available free on their website (click here) There is also a wealth of information available on the “Flora for Fauna” program on the their website www.ngia.com.au (under “Helping your business”). For a more hands-on approach NGINA is running “Grow Me Instead” seminars that offer practical information on avoiding plants that escape from garden cultivation and become invasive, or discourage native wildlife or require lots of water and chemicals to thrive. There are six seminars being offered at different locations across Sydney. Ring 02 9679 1472 for more information, or go to their events page There is also more information available on making your backyard friendly to native animals and plants through the Department of Environment & Conservation “Backyard Buddies” website at http://www3.environment.nsw.gov.au/npws.nsf/content/backyard+buddies.
