Grants for Young Green Scientists

100x100MSGGreen scientists, get your thinking caps on. Until August 6th, conservation groups including the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife are offering three young scientists up to $7,000 each for conservation based research. Postgraduate students and Early Career Researchers (within 3 years of completing a PhD) are eligible to apply.

The Paddy Pallin Foundation Science Grant of $7,000 will be awarded to field-based, high-quality ecological research on plants or animals in terrestrial, marine or freshwater environments. The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife and the Humane Society International are also each offering $7,000 grants under this program for research on marine plants, animals and ecosystems.

“These research projects will lead to tangible outcomes for the management of Australian ecosystems,” explained Associate Professor Peter Banks, President of the Royal Zoological Society, which administers the grants.

“Our Foundation is proud to support the next generation of Australian marine scientists,” said Ms Leonie Gale, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “It is our goal to foster cutting-edge research that is essential for the conservation of Australia’s amazing and unique marine environments.”

The grant recipients for 2010 were Dr Nelika Hughes of the University of New South Wales, Dr Gwenael Cadiou and Dr Peter Macreadie, both of the University of Technology, Sydney.

The Paddy Pallin Foundation grant funded Dr Hughes’ research into the role of fire in regenerating Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub on North Head. Dr Cadiou received a grant to study fish movements and habitat use in Jervis Bay Marine Park, with an eye to improving marine park management strategies. Dr Macreadie used his grant to focus on seagrass ecosystems and the importance of genetic variability to insure against environmental disasters.

Applications for the 2011 science and marine science grants are now open and must be received by 5pm, 6 August 2011. Grant winners will be notified in September.
