From May 2011 to April 2012, the Foundation is funding a much needed project to rehabilitate important Eastern Bristlebird habitat in northern New South Wales.
This project, undertaken by the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NRCMA), will restore 15 ha of Eastern Bristlebird habitat on private land at Findon, Grady’s and Brindle Creeks.
Contractors for the NRCMA will remove weeds such as Lantana and Crofton Weed, and manage the woody understory, to restore these areas to prime Bristlebird habitat. They will also assist in planning strategic fire management actions.
The management of the grassy wet sclerophyll forests like those targeted in this project will help restore habitat for the Eastern Bristlebird, and benefit other species such as the endangered Hastings River Mouse.
The NRCMA has been working for the last five years to save the Eastern Bristlebird from extinction. They have been undertaking habitat restoration work and developing appropriate fire management plans.
The Foundation-funded project is a continuation of the NRCMA’s important work to save and eventually de-list the Eastern Bristlebird as an endangered species.
