A Helping Hand for the Northern Rivers Region of the Byron Coast
In 2010 the Foundation provided funds for the fit out of a Marine Incident Response Vehicle for the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service. This vehicle now has the facilities to assist in marine mammal rescues and strandings along the Northern Rivers Region of the Byron Coast Area.
The tailored vehicle allows for a faster response to marine incidents, resulting in a reduced impact on the marine environment. This vehicle complements the existing whale rescue equipment and transport capacity, and helps provide a quick response mobile location for incident management. It improves the ability of on-ground workers to deal with marine incidents safely and professionally.
At least two whales stranded themselves in late 2010 before the vehicle was fully operational. Hopefully, it can make a positive difference in the near future.
